BookSurge offers two publication options to potential authors. Either you can use their DIY service which allows you to produce your book in a PDF, ready for distribution, or you can pay for a fee-based service to get expert help. IT has various links for publishers, and their final products look professional, but at the moment of our review their site was a real mess.

In this industry so much hangs on image. That's why it was so disappointing to see that Book Surge's website was a construction site of missing links and broken images, with information rather chaotically strewn across the site. Working our way through this mess wasn't too hazardous, and when you get down to it the services on offer seem decent, but this initial presentation really doesn't give the right impression. The website is under renovation as they are moving to a Create Space platform, through which you can create your own books for free, or pay for their services. This includes a few networking features, but as yet, it does not exist.

So, much of this review is based on assumptions that they'll make good on their promises once the new site is up and ready to roll. A website that offers free tools for editing your book, including graphical design, sounds great. The networking options also seem very useful, providing the right people sign up to the groups. Otherwise it might be a case of you shouting into an empty room. 

What the site does have is a book shop, in which you can browse an impressive range of texts that have been published through BookSurge. Generally the covers look professionally produced, and users can also rate the books. That said, there are a suspicious number of very highly rated texts (4.5 or 5 stars with hundreds of votes) which just seems a bit suspect given the titles. The range of genres they publish is admirable, though, and you should be able to find a home for your text on their site. 

Further distribution or marketing techniques seem to be a mystery, but the site does offer author resources which include a glossary of industry terms, as well as tools to use in order to sell on Amazon. There are also some useful tips from experts in the publishing industry, which you can take advantage of whether or not you're using the site for publishing.
