With over 100 years publishing experience, Dorrance Publishing has an impressive catalogue of texts under their wing. They offer a range of professional editorial, publishing, marketing and writing services to would-be writers, but a lack of direct information on their website means that it's a little unclear exactly what's on offer and how much it will cost.
A somewhat uncommon service offered by this website is the option to have a ghost writer develop your book for you. Essentially this means that, if you have a great book idea but you don't have the time or inclination to write it yourself, then you can have a professional writer produce the book for you. Undoubtedly this won't come cheap, writing a book takes time, patience and skill, but if you have the money and wish to see your book idea in print then this could be a viable option.
As we mentioned, the site is a little lacking when it comes to specifics. This makes it hard to recommend because it's not always clear what you're paying for or how much you'll spend. Assuming, then, that money is no barrier, what can you expect? Well they offer a range of traditional and digital production, promotion and distribution services that demonstrate a professional stand on book publishing. They have over 2300 books in their catalogues so far, ranging from fiction to non-fiction, poetry and biographies. Although this is a fairly substantial number of titles, it's also surprisingly low considering they've been in business for over 100 years. On average that's 23 books a year. That considered, it may be an indication that they do not stretch their resources too far and you may find that you receive more conscientious service because they don't overload themselves by taking on too many projects at once.
The book designs range in quality, with some covers looking professional and eye catching, and others looking a bit home-made. If this is something important to you then it's worth taking the time to check out a few of the book covers and talking to the team about who you'd like to design your cover. Prices range too, with books of poetry sitting anywhere from $10 to $22. Again, we'd expect some kind of support in terms of placing your book amongst their current collection.
Dorrance Publication might have been around for a long time but we're not completely convinced that its performance matches its life span. That said it appears to do a professional job, we just wish they'd reveal a few more details as to their process of book creation.
